Our Sightseeing List:

Saint Marks Church

This is an iconic building due to its spectacular, colourful tiled roof with the medieval coat of arms of Croatia, Dalmatia and Slavonia on the left side, and the emblem of Zagreb on the right. Unfortunately, the area outside the church was sealed off, so you can only see the outside from a distance. From what I have read on other sites, it seems to be open for daily mass. Not certain if this permanent.

Where we stayed:

Design Rooms -Kvaternik Square ,Upper town- Medvescak
This was about a 15-20 minute walk to the center. There are also a couple of bakeries nearby, about 5 minutes walk from the property.

Stone Gate
A shrine that is the sole surviving medieval gate that guarded the old upper town. It houses a chapel dedicated to the virgin Mary. Inside the gate is a painting of the Virgin Mary and baby Jesus that survived the 17th Century fire.

Zagreb

How Zagreb got its name
According to one folklore legend, the whole of Zagreb area was suffering from drought. The then Croatian duke plunged his sword into dry earth and fresh water bubbled up. He called out to his soldiers, " Zagrabite!" which means scoop up. The spring still stands on the main square.

Tunel Giric

A Maze of tunnels in Zagreb Upper Town. It was built in 1943 during World War II. Its primary purpose was to shelter civilians from frequent bombings during WWII and the Croatian War of Independence. When not used for events, it is an underground shortcut. It takes about five minutes to walk from end to end.

Mirogoj Cemetery

Lovely architecture at the entrance of the cemetery. Although, it is a shame that some areas were closed off, as it is undergoing renovations due to recent earthquake damage. We decided to walk here from the center. It was quite a walk, around 35- 40 minutes and uphill. We had coffee after, at a Bistro nearby and decided to request a ride with Bolt , which to our surprise, was only 1.80 Euros to go back to our hotel, which would have taken us about 35 minutes to walk!

Funicular

This was unfortunately closed due to renovations. The Cathedral was also unfortunately closed for renovations.

TIPS

BOLT is very economical. The fare from the airport to our hotel was 13 Euros. In comparison, we used a taxi in the morning to go the airport. This was 35 Euros.

Buying Souvenir Magnets- the cost in the main center for a magnet is on average around 4 Euros. This is Ok if you are buying just one or two. However, not if if you want to buy quite a few as gifts. I found some in the market and lovely ones too, for around 2- 2.50 Euros.

INTERESTING FACT
The necktie, the world's most common accessory, was introduced by the Croatians.
